What Does MERV Mean?
MERV rating is an abbreviation for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.

A MERV rating tells you, on a scale of 1-16, how effectively your filter traps the small particles you don’t want circulating through your home. The higher a MERV rating, the higher the amount of certain size particles the filter traps.
What is the difference between MERV, MPR, and FPR Air Filter Ratings?
The three air filter rating systems differ in ranges and were created by separate organizations. MERV ratings extend from 1 to 16. MPR measures ratings based on sizes 0.3 to 1 microns. FPR ratings are on a scale from 4 through 10.

The MERV filter rating is the domestic and international industry standard rating system established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. The other two systems were created by “3M” (MPR) and “The Home Depot” (FPR) to differentiate their offerings. However, at the end of the day, the ratings apply to the SAME filters and can be used in your furnace or AC unit!

Why MERV Filters Simply Don’t Work?
Current HVAC MERV filters with maximum collection efficiency of less than 75% for particles between 0.3 μm and 1 μ and no requirement for particles smaller than 0.3 μ cannot effectively prevent transmission of virus and other pathogens. A minimum of 99.9% (3-log reduction) or 99.99% (4 log reduction) in fine particles is necessary to significantly reduce the airborne viral load, which is well beyond any existing HVAC systems.

High efficiency air particulate air (HEPA) filters with removal rates of fine particles of 99.5% or higher used in cleanrooms and special facilities can provide the collection efficiency but their high-pressure drop preclude them being used in existing HVAC systems.

Their lower air permeability increasing the pressure drop across the filter and strains existing ventilation fan systems also increasing energy consumption proportionately.
High performance HVAC filters from MERV-13 to MERV-16 have the necessary air permeability in terms of air flow but poor capture efficiency, while HEPA filters offer high capture efficiency and low permeability.
